SAFER is designed as a self-rescue device for use on the International Space Station. If an astronaut becomes separated from the station during an EVA and a Shuttle is not available to retrieve the astronaut, he or she would use the propulsive power of the SAFER to return to the International Space Station.

SRI performs stringent cell acceptance and lot certification tests for approval of each lithium primary cell used within this system. SRI also builds and tests SAFER battery packs.
